Top Spinner Third Grade Activity Carrolltowne Elementary School – 05/18/2018

Goals:

  • Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
  • Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 x 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 x 7.

Guided students to build top spinner by exploring gears and gear ratios in order for students to complete companion worksheet to this activity.

Discussed LEGO unit of measures and related to arrays in multiplication.
